Are there limits to our first amendment rights? Were two teenage girl's first amendments rights infringed upon when they were kicked out of a football game for wearing body paint and halter tops. See the link provided for more information.

there are some limitations to the 1st amendment rights but only to keep other people safe. the two girls were not doing anything to hurt anybody they were expressing themselves and showing school spirit theres nothing wrong with that. and its not like they went naked. and if they want to kick out the girls then KICK OUT THE BOYS TOO. the first amendment doesnt say anything about guys can do some things and girls cant

we have the freedom to express our selfs we say something is right for one person and wrong for the other

i don't think that the girls were treated fairly. Last year kirsten went to a basketball game while the guys had their bellies painted, only she had a black tanktop on with her letter painted in gold over it. i think just as long as it's not indecent, it should be allowed.

They were not treated fairly and should not have been removed from the game because it might have been on school grounds and it was a school function but what if it would have been a girl who didn't go to that school or even graduated from high school and did the same thing would they have had the power to remove them? I don't think so

I think they two girls were treated unfairly. They were just trying to show school spirit. There bodies were covered so I don't see why it was such a big deal. Like Ren said, Kirsten did it last year and it was fine. I think as long as the body is covered up everything is fine. Also, if boys do it why can't us girls if we do it appropriately???

Yeah, the girls were treated unfairly. There's always double standards between men and women though, go figure.

no I don't believe their rights were infringed upon you have the right to freedom of expression as long as it is not inapropriate in a public place like this incident was.

Yes I think the girls were treated unfairly. If their was a problem the guys should have been kicked out too. And they were covered up, if families were bugged by that then they better not ever go to the swimming pool or go to the beach, cause they have bikini's tops without the paint! Sometimes not even their bikini's on.

As long as their costume was not indecent and it is not hurting other people the girls should have been allowed to show their school spirit. We have the right to express our feelings and rights.

I think girls were treated unfairly. i would have to agree with sammie and ren that as long as you are covered up then it should be ok.

Renea said...

I don't think they should have been kicked out, as there wasn't anything indecent exposed-what's wrong with seeing a girl's stomach, if you don't mind seeing a guy's?-, but I can kind of understand where the principal was coming from. He/She was probably under pressure with the people coming up to her and complaining, and he/she was probably felt like he/she had to do something.

As everyone else has said, they we treated unfairly. They were just showing school spirit just like the guys at the basketball games last year. The girls we not exposed, they had tops on and they should be treated just like guys would have been.

I don't believe that the first amendment rights of those girls was infringed upon. Sure they have the right to express themselves freely but obviously they were breaking a dress code that officials believed should be enforced. This is not trampling on the Constitution it is just keeping the order.

Well i am not really sure what went on here but i think that girls should be able to do what they want. I just wish our school had people with that much school spirit! ! ! As long as the girls went about this is a clean manner i think that them getting kicked out was uncalled for!

I agree with ren that it isn't fair. We have the freedom to express ourselves but then do it the right way.

if they kick out the girls the boys should of been out to. i think that is was ok when they when they went in through the gate and if they didn't cahnge i don't see why they would kick them out.

this is treated unfairly.. they need to make the rules fair to both genders.

jake kling said...

Yes I do think that there are limits on the first amendment. The girls at the football game were treated unfairly, but i wonder if the girls were wearing something a little less revealing like a muscle shirt if they would have been allowed to stay.

holls said...

they should have been treated the same, it may have not done it in the right manner but the boys should have had to leave as well

bunnylover said...

No i dont think it was. the school has a dress code and both genders should have to follow it. if i came to school with my body painted then i would get sent home. so why should i be able to do that to another school function.

I don't think the 1st amendment is unlimited. Freedom of speech and press and other things can never be completely without limits unless we would have an anarchistic society. I do believe the girls' rights were deprived, not because they were kicked out but because they weren't treated equally to the boys. Either you kick them both out or you let them both stay.

DirtyDeeds said...

I don't know. If the school has a dress code, then it should be the same for both genders, but it covers up the same as a bathing suit, and are we going to start saying that we cannot wear bathing suits.

I think they were treated unfairly cause everybody has the right to show off school spirit as long as they dont take it overboard

i agree with everyone else there rights were infringed and there was nothing wrong with it.

BAM said...

Well it seems to me there wasn't any indecent exposure so let them stay.

I really dont think the girls are in the wrong, they were showing school spirit and they were covered. I think they should have kicked the boys out as well.

joel weis said...

i don't think that the girls were treated fairly. they should of been aloud to be at the game like that to support there team.

Krazy said...

i think that ppl who kicked the grls out for not being dressed right is not legally right in the 1st amaendment is states that freedom of press ect.. If they were guys there would not be a problem. We are still a country were guys are still on "top"

Ma-Choo said...

I believe that the girls were treated unfairly because there were guysthere too so they should have gotten kicked out too. They were covering their parts apropriately. and if its a schooldresscode thats being broken then the guys should have been thrown out for not wearing shirts!

callee said...

yes and no. i think the school took it too far. there is a time and place for everything. maybe the girls should have thought about their actions. if the girls were kicked out then the boys should have been too.

dox said...

i think that they should of been able to do what they wanted because they were covered up and the only reason its different is because of the gender

Anonymous said...

i think that it was all right for the girls to paint themselves like that, but for those that don't think so, then i guess they should have treated the boys the same

Amanda said...

I don't think that the girls should have got dismissed if the boys got to stay at the game. There are people at the game with children that do not want to see that sort of stuff in public and that is why to my understanding that the girls had to leave and i think it is the same if not better than a swimming pool

elsie said...

that was not in appropriate epically if they were wearing cloths under the pant

there are or should be limitations to our 1st amendment right, because if there weren't any, then our world would be a mess. the girls at the ball game were treated unfairly, though. they should not have been kicked out if the boys were allowed to do the same thing and were able to stay. both the boys and the girls should have been either kicked out or able to stay.

BAM said...

i think they should have been alowed to stay they were not exposing themselves in any indecent way.
