Should schools do random drug testing?

I don't think it'll hurt anything, but I also think that school's shouldn't spend a lot of money or time on it. If some kid fails a drug test that doesn't mean that he's never going to do it for the rest of his life. But I also believe that if a kid gets caught, then he/she should get tested again.

I agree i don't think it is a bad deal...when our school first started it everyone thought it was a really bad idea, but it has been going on for a couple of years and we are just kind of used to it now. and it really doesn't hurt you to get tested if you don't have anything to be guilty of.

I think that drug testing is fine as long as the school takes the results with a grain of salt. The school should also not spend to much time on drug tests when they have many other things that need their attention.

I don't think random drug testing is a bad idea at all. Sure it hurts us with numbers in sports and clubs for the people to do it but its their choice. Not many people have been caught for random drug testing so it shows that people know they can't do it. Everyone is use to it now so it never hurts to get tested....

I think that random drug tests at school are good. Except I believe that the schools should test all students and not just the ones involved in activities. I know that students must sign a consent form before they can be tested so this will probably never happen. But a large portion of the drug users are getting away with it because they are not involved in activities.

I dont think its that big of a deal that we have drug testing. I think its good to drug test kids in activities.

sure i think that is it fine that they do drug tests, and i think that everyone should have to take them even if you are not doing any activities.

I think random drug testing is ok. But i also agree with Miller we do have other thing we need worry about in our school.

I think that random drug testing is a great way to find out if the kids in your school are doing drugs. It helps make your school a better and safer place to be.

i agree with doke on the fact that everyone should be randomly tested, and not just those who are in activities.

I don't think it's a big deal. I think the students in sports should get tested and that's it.

I think that drug testing students, who are obligated to go to school by law, is invasion of privacy. Colleges could do the testing, because student freely choose to go to the school, but I'm sure the colleges attendance would drop. Drug users or not people like to protect their privacy.

Like everyone else I agree with the fact that random drug testing is good for the school. If a student does get caught then they are less likely to do it again while they are in school. And like Ren said if a student gets caught they should get tested again. Random drug testing and the drug dog searches keep the school that much safer.

I don't think the schools should test the student's, i think it is an infringement of the students baisic human rights.

I believe drug testing is not a bad thing. It's good to prevent kids from doing drugs not only athletes, but all students. However, I do believe it should not be schools number one priority. They should focus more on academic priorities.

I'n not sure on this issue. It is very weird for me because this was never done in Belgium. I'm not sure if school has the right to invade your privacy by taking drug tests; on the other hand school has an important part in the development of a person and therefore, maybe they should have enough power to be able to control the students.
I suppose it doesn't hurt you if you have nothing to hide, but for some reason I consider it an invasion on my privacy.

I disagree with the "invasion of privacy" people. My I point out to you that human rights only go as far at the law allows, and narcotics and other drugs are AGAINST THE LAW, no matter if you are in school or not the LAW is the LAW and DRUGS are ILLEGAL. So i dont see how you can try to argue that it is your RIGHT. So i say test away, my only problem is that I feel that nothing is done with the tests. If you are caught it seem like no punishment comes to you. but of course that's just me saying.

i agree with the majority of comments. The schools should have the right to test us because they are trying to protect the kids and making sure that they do not harm themselves or others. Yes there is still going to be those people who do drugs and do not go out for a sport because of it but that is their choice. They are the ones missing out. It also keeps sstudents from doing drugs or drinking alcohol becuase there is always that possibility that they will be choosen to take a drug test. And also the fact that the people that do do drugs should be caught becuase drugs are illegal no matter the age you are. And they should know the results of their actions.

I agree with Jake.. its illegal it shouldnt be done.. so go ahead and drug test students.. but there are more important problems in schools.

yes as long as it is cost effective then i do not have a problem

I agree with a lot of the comments. I think it's ok for schools to do drug testing. I also agree with Josh that more kids than just sports should have to get tested as well. Some kids skip out on sports just so they don't get caught.

I am strongly OPPOSED to drug testing. This is absolutely ridiculous that this is even happening here today. They're acting as if doing drugs is such an enormous problem in Goodland that we have to test anyone and everyone who takes part in ANYTHING.

The drug testing for the most part isn't even effective. They claim they do it in order to "help students make the right decisions". But say a kid dabbles in drugs, and wants to try something new in school. Instead of quitting and going out for a sport or activity, he/she is more likely just to not try anything, and keep doing what they're doing. It discourages kids from trying and experimenting new things in school. What students do in their free time is THEIR BUSINESS. The school has no place to invade on our personal lives and make decisions for us. And I'm positive school funding could go into more useful things; like new books that aren't from 1982 in Psychology, or some new science equipment or something.

I think its stupid to have as an issue at GHS. There re bigger problems going on than a few kids taking drugs. Like Toby said we have to be here. Why give us a drug test if were forced to be here. Its dumb. Why is it that we cant afford to have power lifting as a sport, or better book, or even nicer facilities but we cant afford to have "Random" drug testings. I question how random it really is.

I don't think that we should test for drugs for a couple of reasons. The first is that it seems like the school has its separate laws from the state, because at 18 tobacco products are legal, but yet our school says that they will test for those products. Another thing is that our drug test aren't the best. This year a member of the football team took one and he failed because of some medicine he was taking. If i was him i would have been pretty ticked off because their was speculation about if he was on drugs or not. Overall I am not sure if it is the school's decision to drug test. This is a public school and we shouldn't have to test people to see if we suspend them or whatever we do. What are we going to do next, start drug testing at other public places such as churches. It don't make no sense to me.

I disagree its just a waste of time and money and if they do have it only have it for students that want to be tested and leave the others alone

no. its nobody's business what kids do outside of school. the kids who are in activities can do it cuz they are representing the school. but leave the rest of us alone and let us do our own thing

Yes, if you have nothing to hide then why not. Might as well start it now so the kids will get off the drugs before its too late and they ruin their lives.

I think random drug testing is a good idea. I also agree with some of the other comments saying that more then people just in sports should be tested. I mean people are still going to do drugs even when we get stricter on rules but if we tested everyone we might see some improvement because kids don't have the option of backing out like they do with sports so they won't get caught.
