Freedom of Swearing
We all see the need to protect our freedom of speech rights and enjoy the privilege of speaking our minds, but should there be any limits on what words we can use and where we can use them? Lately, we have seen an increase in the use of inappropriate language on national television by well known celebrities. Is this proper use of freedom of speech or should the government crack down on this type of behavior?

I think that by a certain age the majority of kids will start swearing. They'll do it behind their parents backs to get away with it and their parents wont even know. Swearing is like smoking. A bad habit. People are going to do it if they want to and nobody will be able to stop them. People have tried to stop people from smoking, but has it worked? No. I think that we as americans have the right to free speech. And that includes swearing. I'm not going to lie, I do it quite a bit myself. But I know how to control it and I think thats key. Theres an ok place and time for it and people that swear should know when that is. I think it's completely fine.
I feel that we should have little to no restrictions on our language. Maybe just in areas that little kids are. Otherwise, we should say whatever we darn well please!!
I agree with Robert 100%. You know how i feel about this. Oh and FYI T-Rav, umm Jane Fonda and Diane Keaton aren't well known celebrities anymore........
I think that for the most part you can say what you want to but maybe you should watch who you are saying it around. I dont think the celebrites should cuss alot on T.V. because anyone and everyone can see and hear that and may take it extremly personal. Then again I am being kind of a hypocrit in saying this becasue I speak my mind all the time and expecially in government and I problly shouldn't because they most likely take it personally. But I think that I try to get a point across when I do it even though I know that isnt the way to handle it. So overall I think people should be able to say what they want but they should be ready for the fire that comes at them when they have affened someone's beliefs!
Here's how I see it...kids will cuss. In fact, I enjoy it when they do. But if they were my kids, I'd probably hate it. When it comes to TV, I think if it is a family show, or non-scripted, there shouldn't be any, because I'd hate to have to explain to my child what was just said and then have it (yes, I called my child it) go tell other kids what it has learned. But then there are times when I think kids should just go watch Yo Gabba Gabba until they are 15. Oh, and on another note, any show that has Ann Coulter needs to be TV-MA...she is nuts...I'm talking to you, Good Morning America...
I think we should watch our mouths around certain situations.. i'm not going to say that i've NEVER cussed before.. cause guess what.. i have *gasp* .. but i think to do so on national television where little kids can watch it and be influenced on it is a wee bit wrong.... SOOOO as far as keeping or freedom of speech intact, i think that we should be allowed to say what we want when we want... also.. witmans a pirate:)
i think that when people swear, they are using theyre freedom of speach, but not very approriately. we've always had the right to swear, but as the times change peoples standards change and things become more acceptable to some people. it used to be that people had enough respect for others not to swear on tv or whatever, but since not as many people are as respecting as they used to be, no one cares anymore and they think its alright to say whatever comes into their head, even if it is just a bunch of crap
I think that it is not right for a small child to hear a naughty word but i think 12 and up are already exposed to bad language and they should know better not to say it but for smaller children you can explain to them that that is not good language to use and not to use it. I think if government stepped in then some of our rights of freedom of speech will be lost.
i think you should be able to say anything you want anywhere you want because they are just words.
People should know when they need to keep those comments to themselves. If you want to swear and say bad words then you should know when it is an appropriate time to say those things . You also should think about who is going to hear what you say before you say it.
have ever heard the saying sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me. I don't believe this because what someone says to you never gos away. I think that we must be wise at what we say. But i think that if we give the government the right to outlaw swearing, what next! so no i think that we should say what we what to . but we must remember what you say can't be put back in a bottle.
As much as I hate cussing I don't think that it is possible to outlaw it. I believe that in certain situations and events you should not cuss, such as around kids and people that don't want to be hearing it. And when it comes to TV I think that family shows and something that the whole family will be watching needs to have no swearing in it. Although I don't think that it is possible to outlaw it you need to watch what you say around others.
I think that little kids don't need to swear if your adult you can. I think for little kids they are way to young to know those bad words. Till this day I hear little kids cussing. They might of learned from school or from other people that they hear it from. I just don't think little kids should know those kid of words. For adults you can do anything you want cause you know what the words mean.
I don't think swearing is a big deal because they're just words. Not everyone swears but then some people swear a lot, it's not a problem unless every other word is offensive to someone, if thats the case, no one will be around to hear you swear. A few f-words here and there are alright, they spice things up and its easier to pay attention. Several swears throughout a conservation is getting a little testy but every other word and people might think you need to go to church.
It's hard to say. I would love to see some sort of rule about using certain language around children. But we should also be able to express ourselves through words. An it's hard to put a restriction on where certain words can and cannot be used. Even if there was a law of some sort forbidding cursing in certain places, I really can not see how it would be enforced.
You cant keep people from swearing, if you dont want your kids to pick it up then maybe parents shouldnt let them watch tv.
I think that it is freedom of speech if we allow the government to take away are freedom of speech then we allow them to take away are guns ect...
Swearing is like smoking. A bad habit. some people don't really care what the word means. It like saying another bad word.
The government shouldn't control how our language has to be. Every individual by him or her self should be able to decide what they want to say! If the want to swear, then they should sweart but they have to know where they can swear and where not. If they get trouble for swearing, then it's their own mistake.
I think some things should still be censored on live television or they should be prohibited because usually the people talking are role models in our society and they need to act and conduct themselves as role models. The younger kids look up to these people and if they see them using words they have never heard before and they are not appropiate our kids should not be put in the position to hear these words. When on live television celebrities should act like role models for the younger kids and that is it.
I think they should be able to say anything they want to on tv and anywhere to that point. cause it doesnt matter kids are going to hear it anywhere they go tv or no tv. If they dont want them to hear that kind of thing then lock your kids in the basement keep them away from tv, and let them live the sheltered life.
I think people will always swear. There shouldnt be any kind of law about it either. People just need to know when it is appropriate to swear and when it isnt.
No I do not beleive that we should have limits because that will only lead to another thing being taken away and another and so on. I believe that there is a certain age for which you should start cussing/ swearing but that is up to the parents and or the person.
