Death Penalty

Is the death penalty an appropriate way to deal with despicable crimes? Does it prove to be a good deterrent to these crimes or is a cruel and unusual punishment?

i think the death penalty is a little pointless. its completely ineffecient, criminals sit on death row for years and eat up tax dollars. it would be different if there was an execution within a year or so, but some criminals are on there for decades before they are put to death. also, alot of people that are eventually proven not guilty are taken off death row each year, so if we executed them before we found out they weren't in fact guilty we would be killing an innocent person. so i think we need to find a better, more productive means of punishment. i just don't know what.

getting killed for killing someone. does that make sense? its kind of a double negative. there putting people on death row for murdering people and showing that its bad. but what example do we set by just killing them right back?

From a common sense point of view: Why should we give serial killers a second chance? Can the victims get a second chance? I think not. But I can see how it would send a confusing message to people and children. Do we really want our children to think that killing is okay as long as the government does it? I can see a kid getting that impression. However, I think the death penalty should not be abolished. We don't have room in our jails to be giving everybody the life sentance. And letting them out of jail makes me unsteady.

I think that in some cases the death penalty is fine. in other cases no.

I think that the death penalty would be more effective if it wouldn't take so long. I personally feel that if someone commits a horrible crime they should be put to death.

If a guy rapes and murders 12 kids, I don't think it's right for him to sit in prison, enjoying his outside life, meals, books, befriending men named Glitter. It's not fair. But the death penalty is not exactly 100% effective. They say they are on death row, but death row is usually decades, so then you start to wonder what is really going to happen.

It all depends on the situation. If it is fitting punishment do it! Prisoners get treated quite well, and if they committed some terrible crime, then they shouldn't be clothed, fed, allowed to play checkers with Glitter (nice comment Lauren), and watch cable TV. I don't even have cable, but a whole bunch of criminals do, now there is something wrong with that!
So I feel that the death penalty should stay, and be enforced.

I think the death penalty had both pros and cons to it but i think if its a case such as BTK i think there is plenty of evidence to say that he killed many people and i think in cases such as that they should be put to death. In other cases such as one of the videos example said when people go into road side stops and rob them and things get out hand and people get killed that probably is not a case for the death penalty unless the person had intentions of doing it and has done it mutiple times. I think there needs to be a significant amount of evidence for a person to be put to death other wise it should not be used.

I think the same as andrea in the sense that it has pros and cons. But the one thing that makes me against the death penalty is that I believe it is an easy way out. They committ a crime and we give them an easy way out by just killing them. If the whole point of the death penalty is making them suffer then wouldn't making them rot in prison and think about what they did their whole life make it worse. If they truly did not have any remorse for what they did then they should be put on death row.

I think the death penalty has always been the right way to punish people. Honestly I dont understand why people question wether or not its cruel or imoral. Was what they did to their victums cruel and imoral ....uh yeah! If I had it my way criminals would die the same way his/her victim did! Afterall thats only fair. I dont think that we should get rid of the death penalty if anything it needs to be more common everywhere. Most of the people iin prison end up killing themselves anyway, so why dont we just do it from the start.

I think that the there are both pros and cons for the death penalty. On the one hand they are on death row for so long that it isn't very effective. But on the other hand if they killed someone and did something horrible to them then they deserve to be killed and suffer themselves. But it needs to be done sooner then it is not years after they have been sentenced.

I don't think that death penalty is the best way. Personally I don't like the idea of killing people, even if they killed someone... What is the point of death penalty? Is it a good punishment? I don't think so!

i think the death penalty isn't a good thing. the ones who execute the killers are after this also killers. with killing them you do them a favor because they don't have to think anymore about what they did and they don't have a bad feeling anymore.

The Death penalty is not a good thing. Why should we take someone life just because he took someone elses life. If so does two wrongs make a right? Anyway,if we never give the chance for people to change, then when should someone forgive you for doing something wrong? So I think that the death penalty is not the way to go. I would what to give that person a second chance.

i'm all for the death penalty, i think that it has its flaws, but the people are in prison, eating up tax dollars, soooo fix the problem:)... i think that of course it should be for very serious offenders, not just an accidental death or something, but someone who's killed several times. I think that it could be tweeked a little bit, but i like the idea...

I am all for the death penalty, if someone is crazy enough that they go around killing people just for the fun of it, I dont want them in prison with a chance of breaking out and killing more people, or being in prison killing other people that are in prison.

I believe it is, and then again i do not.Now you may call me morbid, but i believe that it should only be for people who are truly brutal. Like serial killers, and rapists. I believe that they should die how they killed people. However that is cruel and unusual punishment, and it is not allowed in our society. So i believe that we should shorten the time for the death penalty.

The death penalty is the way to go because if people are going to act like that, and do stupid crimes its there fult so im for the death penalty.
